Shopping

For travelers who wish to get some duty free shopping in while on vacation, there's no better place than Freetown on Grand Bahama Island. This town was created in the 1950s as a commerce zone, with duty free shopping at every turn. Visit Port Lucaya Bazaar, near Freetown, for a virtual marketplace of shops and craft vendors. Duty free liquor stores can be found here as well. In fact, the whole island of Grand Bahama is duty free. Also try the International Bazaar for a great selection of quality goods at fair prices.

Travelers from the U.S. can bring home a total of $600 worth of items from the Bahamas. They must have been in the Bahamas for at least 48 hours to qualify to bring home duty free items. Then they have to wait at least 30 days to do it again. Here are some of the other limits for travelers from the U.S.:

  1. up to 2 liters of alcoholic beverages
  2. must be at least 21 to bring back alcohol
  3. no Cuban cigars!
  4. if you aren't here for 48 hours, your limit is $25 duty free
  5. if you aren't here for 48 horus, you can't pool your limit with other family members
  6. same goes for 4 and 5 if you haven't waited 30 days since your last visit
  7. Bahamanian-made items for personal use don't have to count toward your limit
  8. this woudl include straw hats, conch shells, locally-brewed beer, etc

Travelers from Canada have different duty free rules.

  1. anyone, regarless of age, can bring in up to $50 CDN of purchases after only 24 hours outside of Canada
  2. after 48 hours outside of Canada, they can bring in up to $200 CDN worth of items.
  3. after 7 days outside of Canada, they can bring in up to $500 worth of goods
  4. limit is 2 pounds of tobacco and 40 oz of alcohol
