Grand Bahamas

Grand Bahamas is the nickname for Grand Bahamas Island, which is just 68 miles from Florida. It's quite common for vacationers to boat over to Grand Bahamas for the day. There are also numerous flights every day from West Palm Beach, Miami or Fort Lauderdale airports. One rather fun and pleasant option is to take a day cruise out of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. It's a simple hop skip and a jump, no matter how you make the trip.

Come to Grand Bahamas and be treated royally. The Bahama Islands in general are known for the warm hospitality of its residents. Grand Bahamas in particular stands out in this degree, having been chosen by various rich and famous vacationers throughout the years as a favorite place to unwind and have fun. Howard Hughes loved Grand Bahamas and so will you.

Freeport is perhaps the most famous town on Grand Bahamas, but Lucaya is worth a trip as well. First stop at the Port Lucaya Marina and Marketplace for shops, tours, and a place to eat. Across the way you'll find the beach, and further out you'll find corners of the island where you can feel like you're the only tourist around.

Attractions on Grand Bahama include outdoorsy things like botanical gardens at Garden of the Groves, golfing, horseback riding, and make sure to visit the Rand Nature Center and don't miss Lucayan National Park. The Bahamas Reef Golf Course was redesigned by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. And as with most of the popular Bahama Islands, you can also book scuba diving, snorkeling, and fishing charters. For a break from the sun, or something after dinner, try Isle of Capri Casino. A little sun, a little ocean water, and a little gambling...the perfect vacation!

Freeport is the Bahamas' second largest city, after Nassau. While Nassau contains old world charm, Freeport is known for a more fast-paced way of life. This city didn't even exist forty years ago! Aside from modern day pleasures and diversions like golf and gambling, you can also find remnants of Arawak culture beyond the city limits. Awaraks were the island's earliest civilizations. excitement
