Key West Chickens

locate via mapquest
Description

Key West Chickens - Chickens are common on all the Florida Keys but Key West is particularly known for them. There are several breeds on the Keys and they are descendants of food and fighting chickens from the early Keys Settlers. Although cock fighting is now illegal as recently as 2007 there have been incidents of people being arrested for fighting chickens, so the tradition is not entirely dead. There is an ongoing conflict in Key West on whether the chickens should be allowed to stay. The residents are split on whether they are noisy messy pests or quaint island flavor. There have been incidents of the city setting out traps for the chickens only to have locals disable or move the traps. Pretty much as soon as the sun starts to creep up you will hear roosters crowing in Key West, which not all residents appreciate
